From 1 January 2026, new rules will come into effect under the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU). These updates will change the proof of competence required for buying and using professional-use rodenticides. At 1env, we’re here to ensure you and your business are fully prepared for these changes moving into the new year.

Why are these changes happening?

The CRRU stewardship regime aims to reduce the environmental impact of rodent control — particularly the presence of rodenticide residues in non-target wildlife such as birds of prey. Despite progress since 2016, further improvements are needed, so the Government Oversight Group and CRRU are tightening the rules to ensure only trained, competent users can access professional-use products.

So what’s changing in 2026

From January 2026, professional users will need to show one of the following at the point of purchase:

CRRU-approved training certificate dated within the last 5 years

or

An older CRRU-approved certificate plus active membership in a CRRU-approved CPD scheme

Approved CPD schemes include BASIS PROMPT, BPCA Registered, and the British Pest Register. Users registered with these schemes will be required to earn the yearly amount of CPD points / hours / credits as a part of the regular quota for membership, with 3 of these being formed of rodent control content that conforms to the CRRU guidelines.

Farm assurance membership alone will no longer be accepted as proof of competence. This applies to all professional user groups — pest controllers, gamekeepers, and farmers.

How do I earn the necessary CPD points?

CPD points can be earnt from a range of activities, from attending training course to watching pest control webinars and podcasts. At 1env, we have a range of training courses and events that offer CPD point rewards, which can be used to fulfil your membership quota. These include practical, hands-on courses such as our drain awareness or wasp control courses, which offer delegates experience which they can use out on the job, as well as online courses which are flexible and work for your time frame.

In addition to this, we also run the full RSPH Level 2: Award in Pest Management course, which upon completion provides delegates with the required certificate to work as a Pest Control Technician, in public health pest control.
